Lesson 1. The journey together

How to involve others?

Caregiving can sometimes challenge friendships and relationships. It is common for people providing care to feel that no one understands what they are going through. Talking about your thoughts and feelings with others might help make you feel better.

Caring for someone with dementia does not have to be a lonely experience. Let friends and family members know when you could use a break. Caring for a loved one with dementia is sometimes too big a job for one person.

Check your understanding

Feeling stressed due to conflicting duties.

Kiran’s mother-in-law, Sarabjit, has dementia. Kiran has to drop the kids to school the next day as her husband needs to leave for work earlier than usual, so she needs to leave the house at 8:00 the next morning. Kiran’s sister-in-law, who also helps out is not able to arrive until 9:00 in the morning. This leaves Sarabjit alone for over an hour. Kiran wonders whether it would be okay to leave Sarabjit alone and feels stressed because she is not sure what to do.

How could Kiran deal with the situation?
