Lesson 4. Involving others and getting support

Available support services

As well as involving family and friends, you might want to access professional services for support. The services available will vary in different places.

Many charities and health services have dementia advisors or dementia support workers, who can provide guidance on supporting someone with dementia.

There are groups for the person with dementia and carers to attend together, such as dementia cafes and music groups. Other services such as carers groups are just for carers, and provide an opportunity to meet others in a similar situation to you.

Alzheimer’s Society has a directory of local support services (available in English only). You might find that there are groups and services specifically for South Asian carers, though the availability of these services will vary.

If you are looking for advice or information about services, you can phone the Dementia Support Line on 0333 150 3456 where you can speak to an advisor in English or another language. To speak to an advisor in a language other than English, call the support line, state the language name, hang up and wait. The advisor will then call you back with an interpreter.
