Module 2 Lesson 4. Involving others and getting support Financial support for carers You or the person you care for may be able to access financial support from the government. ‘Carer’s allowance’ is financial support for those looking after a friend or family member with dementia. There are also benefits for the person with dementia, known as ‘Personal Independence Payment’ and ‘Attendance Allowance’. You might think of yourself as someone’s son, daughter or spouse, and not their carer, so it might seem strange to claim money for the support you give. But there is no shame in accessing financial support. You are entitled to this money from the government and it could make a big difference to you and the person with dementia, especially if you have had to give up work or reduce your hours.
