Module 1 Introduction to dementia What can increase the chance of developing dementia? Many things can increase the chance of developing dementia. Some of these risk factors can be avoided, and others can’t. The biggest risk factor for dementia is ageing – as someone gets older they have a higher chance of developing dementia. There are some genes that can pass on an increased chance of developing dementia. However, many risk factors are linked to lifestyle, and evidence shows there are things that can help reduce the risk of developing dementia, including: • Regular physical activity• Eating healthily• Not smoking• Drinking less alcohol• Staying mentally and socially active
