Introduction to dementia

What is dementia?

Dementia occurs as a result of disease processes that damage the brain over time.

Symptoms can include memory loss, communication problems, changes in behaviour and difficulty carrying out everyday activities. Dementia is progressive, which means the symptoms will get worse and change over time.

Dementia affects all groups of society and is not linked to social class, gender, ethnic group, or where you live.

Dementia is not a part of normal ageing. Although dementia is more common among older people, younger people can also be affected.
